eSIM phone compatibility: complete device list (2026)

By MySIMGuide Editors · Updated May 2026 · 6 min read

The Verdict:

Every iPhone from XS (2018) onward supports eSIM. Every Samsung Galaxy S20 and later supports eSIM in unlocked configurations. Every Google Pixel 3 and later supports eSIM. If your phone is a 2019 or newer flagship from any of these brands, it almost certainly supports eSIM. The fastest check: Settings, Cellular (iOS) or Settings, Connections, SIM Manager (Android) — look for “Add eSIM.”

01 — Self-check

How to check if your
phone supports eSIM.

iOS · Android · 60 seconds

The fastest check is in your phone's Settings. No model lookup required. This works on any phone running iOS 12.1+ or Android 9+.

iOS (iPhone)
  1. 01Open Settings.
  2. 02Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).
  3. 03Tap Add Cellular Plan or Add eSIM.
  4. 04If this option exists, your phone supports eSIM.
  5. 05If you only see a physical SIM listed with no option to add, eSIM is disabled or unsupported.

On iOS 16+, you can also go to Settings, General, About and look for an “Available eSIM” or “EID” entry. An EID number confirms eSIM hardware.

Android (Samsung, Google, others)
  1. 01Open Settings.
  2. 02Tap Connections (Samsung) or Network & Internet (Pixel/stock Android).
  3. 03Tap SIM Manager or SIM cards.
  4. 04Look for Add eSIM or Add mobile plan.
  5. 05If the option is present, eSIM is supported and enabled.

On Android, you can also dial *#06#to display your device's EID number. An EID confirms the eUICC chip is present. If no EID appears, eSIM is not supported on your device.

02 — Apple

iPhone eSIM support:
XS through 16 Pro Max.

10 model groups · 2018–2024

Apple has supported eSIM since 2018. US iPhone 14 and later have no physical SIM tray at all. International models retain a nano-SIM slot alongside eSIM.

03 — Samsung

Samsung Galaxy eSIM support:
S20 through S25, Z Fold/Flip.

9 model groups · 2020–2025

Samsung supports eSIM on all Galaxy S and Z series from 2020 onward. The caveat: some carrier-locked US units shipped before 2022 had eSIM disabled. Unlocked units from any year support eSIM.

04 — Google Pixel

Google Pixel eSIM support:
Pixel 3 through Pixel 9.

7 model groups · 2018–2024

Google added eSIM to the Pixel 3 in 2018. Pixel 7 and later store up to 8 profiles simultaneously. All Pixel phones are sold unlocked, so carrier lock is not a concern.

eSIM support outside Apple, Samsung, and Google is inconsistent. Motorola's Edge and Razr lines support it. OnePlus and Sony support it on select models. Huawei removed eSIM from China-market phones after 2022.

06 — Carrier lock

Carrier lock: what it means
and how to fix it.

US · UK · Australia · EU rules

A carrier lock ties your phone to one carrier's network. For eSIM, some carriers also lock the eSIM provisioning system, preventing you from adding a non-carrier eSIM profile.

There are two distinct locks to understand. A network lock prevents your phone from connecting to other carriers' networks. An eSIM provisioning lock prevents you from adding a new eSIM profile from a different provider. These are independent. Some phones have one but not the other.

To check for a network lock on iOS: Settings, General, About. If you see “No SIM Restrictions” under Carrier Lock, the phone is unlocked. On Android, insert a SIM from a different carrier. If it connects, the phone is network-unlocked.

United States

Carriers must unlock devices after contract end or full payoff. AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile all have online unlock request forms. Processing takes 1–5 business days.

United Kingdom

Ofcom rules require UK carriers to unlock phones for free upon request. EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three all provide unlocking within 30 days.

European Union

EU regulations require carrier unlocking upon contract completion. Most EU carriers comply within 5–10 business days. Prepaid devices may be unlocked immediately.

Buying a phone outright (not on contract) from the manufacturer's website is the most reliable way to guarantee an unlocked, eSIM-capable device. Apple, Samsung, and Google all sell factory-unlocked units directly.

Travel eSIM and carrier lock

A travel eSIM from an international provider is a data-only profile. Even if your home carrier locked the eSIM provisioning for domestic plans, many carrier locks do not block international travel eSIM profiles. Test by attempting to add the travel eSIM before your trip. If it fails with an “eSIM locked” message, contact your carrier for an unlock first.

07 — Compatibility questions

eSIM compatibility:
5 questions answered.

5 questions · direct answers

My phone is on the compatibility list but eSIM is not showing in Settings. Why?

Three causes cover 95% of cases. First, carrier lock: your carrier disabled eSIM at the firmware level — common with US carrier-locked Samsung units. Contact your carrier to confirm. Second, regional variant: some models sold in specific markets (China, Hong Kong) ship without eSIM hardware. Check your phone's model number against the manufacturer's regional spec sheet. Third, outdated software: update to the latest iOS or Android version and check again. Settings, Cellular on iOS and Settings, Connections, SIM Manager on Android are the correct paths.

Can I use eSIM on a carrier-locked phone?

It depends on whether the carrier locked the eSIM or just the network band. Some carriers lock the network but leave eSIM functional. Others disable eSIM entirely via firmware. To check: go to Settings, Cellular (iOS) or SIM Manager (Android) and look for an 'Add eSIM' or 'Add cellular plan' option. If it is missing, the carrier has likely disabled it. You can request an unlock from your carrier once your contract term is complete or the device is fully paid off. US carriers are legally required to unlock devices after these conditions are met.

How many eSIM profiles can I store on my phone?

iPhone XS through iPhone 13: up to 8 profiles stored, 2 active simultaneously. iPhone 14 and later (US): eSIM-only, 2 active lines at once, up to 8 stored. Samsung Galaxy S21 and later: up to 5 profiles, 2 active. Google Pixel 7 and later: up to 8 profiles, 2 active. Active means the line is on and usable. Stored means installed but toggled off. Switching between stored profiles takes seconds.

Does eSIM work on an unlocked phone bought abroad?

Usually yes, with one caveat. A factory-unlocked phone supports eSIM regardless of where it was purchased, provided the model includes eSIM hardware for that region. The caveat: some Chinese market variants of Samsung phones (sold in mainland China) and some Huawei models do not include eSIM hardware even in unlocked configurations. Verify the exact model number against the manufacturer's international spec sheet before buying a phone overseas.

Do budget phones support eSIM?

Some do. Google Pixel 7a ($499) and Pixel 8a ($499) both support eSIM. Samsung Galaxy A54 and A55 support eSIM in most markets. The Samsung Galaxy A34 does not. Apple's iPhone SE 3rd generation (2022) supports eSIM and is the most affordable Apple eSIM option. Below $300 USD, eSIM support is inconsistent. Motorola's Edge and Razr lines include eSIM; most of its budget G series does not. Always confirm the specific model before purchasing.
