What is an eSIM? A complete guide for travelers (2026)

By SIM Guide Editors · Updated May 2026 · 6 min read

In one paragraph

An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone's hardware. You activate it by scanning a QR code from a provider. No plastic, no tray, no swap. For travel, it means buying a local data plan before you board and landing already connected. About 2 minutes to set up.

01 — Setup

Three steps from purchase to online

01
Buy a plan online
Pick country and trip length on any eSIM provider. Pay $5-$30. They email a QR code in seconds.
02
Scan the QR
Open the camera, point at the QR. Tap Add cellular plan. Name it. Two minutes, no airport counter.
03
Switch on landing
On the plane, toggle the new line on. Data activates the second you touch a local network. Your home SIM stays on for calls.

04 — FAQ

Common questions about eSIM

What does eSIM stand for?

Embedded SIM. The physical chip is soldered to your phone's logic board. It is a real SIM card, just one that is already in place from the factory. The profile (your carrier + plan) is loaded over the air.

Can I have two phone numbers active at once?

Yes. Most modern phones support dual-SIM with one physical + one eSIM, or two eSIM profiles. Each line gets its own number and data plan. Apps like WhatsApp let you assign a default.

Will an eSIM drain my battery faster?

No. eSIM uses the same radio as a physical SIM. Running two active lines simultaneously costs about 3–5% extra battery per day, measurable but not noticeable.

Can I transfer my home carrier to eSIM?

Yes. Most US, UK, and EU carriers support eSIM transfer in their app. iOS 16+ even does a direct iPhone-to-iPhone eSIM migration.

What if I lose my phone with an active eSIM?

Same as any SIM: report the line to your carrier and they deactivate the profile remotely. Travel eSIMs are usually data-only and capped, so the financial risk is small.

Does eSIM work on smartwatches?

Yes on cellular Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch LTE models, but the plan is for the watch's own number, not a shared eSIM with your phone. Travel eSIMs generally do not support watches.
