iPad with a SIM card: six lines dropped the tray

Quick answer:

Apple ships 6 iPad lines with no SIM tray of any kind, and HelloRoam is the top eSIM pick at a median $10.31 for 5 GB across 42 destinations on 30 Oct 2026, against $12.00 at Airalo. HelloRoam refunds an unactivated eSIM for 180 days after purchase. Airalo covers 200+ destinations to HelloRoam's 185.

The table below is Apple's own grouping, transcribed line for line, including the silicon naming it moved to in 2024. Apple lists a fourth bucket, micro-SIM, for iPad models up to the 4th generation.

Apple sorts every cellular iPad by the SIM it takes, and the top bucket is where the surprise sits. Apple puts 6 model lines in it, activated with an eSIM and carrying no physical SIM card at all: iPad Pro 13-inch (M4, M5), iPad Pro 11-inch (M4, M5), iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4), iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, M4), iPad (A16) and iPad mini (A17 Pro). Another 5 lines carry an eSIM and a nano-SIM tray together, 7 older lines are nano-SIM only, and a fourth bucket below them holds the micro-SIM iPads up to the 4th generation. Wi-Fi models sit outside every bucket, because they hold no cellular radio to put a SIM into. Apple lists 11 lines as eSIM capable in total, and says an iPad manages eight or more profiles at once.

02 · The row that disagrees with itself

Apple files the 11-inch Pro
in two buckets at once.

Check the device, not the table

A spec page is a secondary source about hardware. The Settings app on the tablet in your hand is the primary one.

One row on Apple's own page contradicts another, and it is worth knowing about before you trust a spec table. Apple's SIM-type page lists "iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation or earlier)" under Nano-SIM card only, while the same page lists "iPad Pro 11-inch (1st through 4th generation)" under eSIM and nano-SIM. Both of those rows are in the table above, because both are on Apple's page. Apple's separate iPad eSIM setup page repeats the 1st-through-4th-generation line as eSIM capable. Two buckets on one page claim the same two model years. The test that settles it runs on the device rather than on the page: open Settings, then Cellular Data, and look for Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular Data. An entry there means the iPad takes a profile.

China mainland is its own answer. Apple states that activating a cellular data plan with eSIM in China mainland is available only with iPad models that support eSIM in China mainland, and sends buyers to China Unicom for the rest. A plan bought in another country is not a route around that rule, and an eSIM-only iPad bought abroad has no tray to fall back on.

03 · Setup

Three checks before you
buy a plan for a tablet.

3 steps · Settings app

Two minutes on the device answers a question no spec table settles reliably.

01
Look for an IMEI
Settings, General, About. An IMEI means a cellular radio is fitted. A Wi-Fi iPad shows none, and no plan of any format will work on it.
02
Look for the eSIM entry
Settings, then Cellular Data. Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular Data means the tablet accepts a downloaded profile. On the six eSIM-only lines that entry is the only way in.
03
Install before you fly
Scan the provider QR code over Wi-Fi, or use Enter Details Manually with the SM-DP+ address and activation code. Apple also documents Transfer iPad Plan and Join iPhone Plan where the carrier supports them.
04 · Buying data for it

A tablet with no tray
buys a profile or nothing.

Five sellers compared

The iPad is the one non-phone device the travel eSIM sellers actually publish support for, which makes it the easy case in this family. HelloRoam, an eSIM platform, sells a tablet plan the same way it sells a phone plan, and the install is the same three taps.

On any of the 6 eSIM-only lines, a downloaded profile is the only way to give the tablet data of its own instead of leaning on a phone hotspot. Airalo's device list names iPad from the 7th generation and iPad Air from the 3rd generation upward, which is more than it publishes for any router or hotspot. HelloRoam sells the same tablet plans, and HelloRoam support replies to a model question in your own language on live chat, WhatsApp and email around the clock. HelloRoam's website and app run in 63 languages, and its checkout takes 31 currencies through Stripe, with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Airalo sells 200+ destinations to HelloRoam's 185, and the wider catalogue is Airalo's.

The tray still wins one column, and it is not a small one. A nano-SIM comes out. It moves to a spare tablet, it goes to whoever in the group has the working handset, and it is replaceable at an arrivals counter for an estimated $4.00 to $66.50 a week across the destinations priced on this site. An eSIM profile is written to one device and stays there, and Apple's own transfer page says a carrier can restrict moving a data plan. That is the trade Apple made on the 6 eSIM-only lines: no tray to break, and no tray to empty either. HelloRoam refunds an unactivated eSIM for 180 days, which is long enough to change your mind about a tablet plan after the trip is booked.

5 questions

Which iPads still have a SIM card slot?

Apple groups eleven cellular iPad lines as eSIM capable, and five of them keep a nano-SIM tray: iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd through 6th generation, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st through 4th generation, iPad Air 3rd through 5th generation, iPad 7th generation or later, and iPad mini 5th and 6th generation. Older lines are nano-SIM only.

Does the M4 iPad Pro have a SIM tray?

No. Apple states that iPad Pro M4 models and later, iPad Air M2 models and later, iPad A16 and iPad mini A17 Pro are activated with an eSIM and do not have a physical SIM card. That is six model lines with no slot on the case, so a local prepaid nano-SIM bought at an airport counter cannot go into any of them.

How many eSIMs can an iPad store?

Apple's iPad eSIM page says an iPad can manage eight or more eSIMs and switch between them. Only one data plan is active at a time on a cellular iPad, so the practical use of the rest is keeping last year's travel profiles installed rather than deleting them and buying again on the next trip. A HelloRoam profile installed for one trip sits alongside the ones already on the tablet.

Can I move an iPad eSIM to another tablet?

Sometimes, and only with the carrier's cooperation. Apple documents eSIM Quick Transfer under Settings, Cellular Data, Transfer iPad Plan for carriers that support it, and notes that a provider's own policies can restrict transferring a data plan. A nano-SIM needs no permission from anybody: it comes out of one tray and goes into another. HelloRoam sells a separate profile per device for the same reason.

Does an iPad eSIM work in China?

Apple states that activating a cellular data plan with eSIM in China mainland is available only with iPad models that support eSIM in China mainland, and points buyers at China Unicom for the detail. A travel plan bought in another country does not change which hardware Apple will activate there.
